Manga Library
At the Manga Library we run occasional workshops that teach translation theory and practice for manga translation. We also have a regular translation circle which has come out of these workshops (although half the group are currently contributing from various non-Monash locations). The Manga Translation Workshop has two focuses, the first being the translation of online Japanese webcomics. This allows us to contact and work with the original authors, and with their permission we produce English language translations of their comics and post them on the LostinScanlation website.
The second area of manga translation we focus on is to translate manga from the library collection in order to create 'readers' that give access to some of the titles we only have in Japanese to people who don't know enough Japanese to read them in their original form.
In Japanese, taiyaki is a fish-shaped cake with a sweet filling, usually red bean paste or custard. The magazine takes its name from the food as a word play on the Japanese word taiyaku (bilingual) because we strive to include bilingual articles and gloss translations to highlight interesting Japanese language points. Also, with the gloss translations, it aim to be like the Babel fish of manga translation.
