Title: Hollow Fields
Language: English - complete 3 volumes
Author: Madeleine Rosca

While trying to get to Saint Galbat’s Academy for young ladies, 9½ year old Lucy Snow instead ends up enrolling at Miss Weaver’s Academy for the Scientifically Gifted and Ethically Unfettered. It has warm private dorms and free education! But is dark and creepy, with classes like Live Taxidermy and Cross-Species Body-Part Transplantation – just what sort of school is this? And what exactly happens to the lowest-achiever of each week, sent on detention never to return?

Hollow Fields is drawn in a ‘cute steampunk’ style with great character designs, especially the sinister teachers. But it’s too cute to be scary. Sort of like a dark ‘Harry Potter’, very atmospheric and engaging, with heaps of extras at the back of the book.

Title: Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture
Language: English - complete 9 volumes

Although obsessing over characters from video games or figurines of overly-cute girls, dressing up as anime/manga/video game characters and sitting in a small room crammed with manga, spending hours discussing the latest episode Kujibiki Unbalance may seem odd to most people, it’s just another day at the the Genshiken club. Enter, if you dare, the world of the otaku and follow the adventures of the club’s members, most of whom are not shy about following their interests despite the ridicule and strange looks! Funny, heart-warming and ..er… interesting. Highly recommended, rated 16+ and a must read for self-proclaimed otaku.
