Manga Library

Japan Festival in Box Hill

Event Report by Katherine Pickhaver

May 2009 saw the Manga Library once again take part in the Japan Festival at Box Hill. Like previous years the Japan Festival had performances, displays and stalls, from traditional kimono and ikebana, to contemporary anime and radio. There was also plenty of food like takoyaki, crepes and yakitori.

In previous years, the Manga Library has had a table in the Town Hall’s Lower Hall among the traders. However this year saw us move up into the Main Hall, so volunteers didn’t miss a moment of activities on the Main Stage. These included performances of Taiko drumming and martial arts, traditional Japanese music and dance and a crowd favourite – the singing competition!

We also got a chance to talk to many people about the culture of manga in Japan and Australia, and some of the difficulties involved with manga translation. The festival is a great chance for people to meet others who share an interest in Japanese culture and explore the many different activities, clubs and opportunities available. We look forward to going again next year!
